Libya wins case against Brazilian companies seeking compensation

Source: Xinhua   2018-02-23 11:24:11

TRIPOLI, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Libyan government has won an international legal case against two Brazilian construction companies that claimed 96 million U.S. dollars in damages due to the suspension of their projects in Libya, local authorities said Thursday.

"The efforts of the Department of State Cases Affairs, in coordination with the Audit Bureau, were successful. This cooperation has resulted in the winning of the international case by the chamber of commerce in Paris rejecting the case filed against Libya by the Libyan-Brazilian company and the Brazilian company Odebrecht," the Libyan Audit Bureau said in a statement Thursday.

The Libyan Audit Bureau has suspended the compensation payment procedures for the two companies and refused to settle and appeal the case. However, the infrastructure projects of the two companies have been suspended since 2011 due to the deteriorating security condition.

In addition, the Libyan department also called for continued mutual coordination of state institutions to "stop those wishing to exploit the circumstances in Libya to seize its funds and assets."

Following the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime, foreign companies left Libya and all projects executed by this kind of companies have been suspended.
