Chairman of the Sri Lankan National Council for Road Safety Sisira Kodagoda told Xinhua that some three-wheeler taxis had been metered, but many taxis had not yet been metered.

He said the operators of three-wheeler taxi services should issue a printed bill to their passengers indicating the fare and the distance from April 30, 2018.

The chairman added, a six-month grace period would be given to the operators to get adjusted to the new requirements.

According to the chairman, traffic police have been instructed to arrest any three-wheeler drivers who don't give the passenger the bill.

Currently, there are around 750,000 operating three-wheelers as taxis in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Tourism Development Minister John Amaratunga said this would be a wise move for the benefit of tourists visitng Sri Lanka.

"We also want to ensure hassle-free travel for tourists in Sri Lanka," the Minister told Xinhua.
