Rwanda moves to invest more in improving transport infrastructure

KIGALI, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda is planning more investment in improving the country's transport infrastructure in order to plug domestic road network gaps and stimulate economic growth, a senior official said Thursday.

"We are going to focus more on investing in road transport infrastructure network across the country. Domestic and international transportation is a key factor for economic growth," said Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye, Minister of State in charge of Transport in the Ministry of Infrastructure, at a national urban mobility conference in Rwandan capital city Kigali.

Despite significant improvements made to Kigali's road network and other feeder road networks across the country, there is still a lot to do to close road transport infrastructure gap, said the minister.

The two-day forum is organized by the Rwandan government in collaboration with Africa Transport Policy Program, an international partnership program that aims to facilitate policy development and related capacity building in the transport sector in Africa.

Rwanda's national roads both paved and unpaved which are in good conditions stand at 71.4 percent, according to latest figures from the Rwandan ministry of infrastructure.
