Libya, Canada discuss mutual cooperation

TRIPOLI, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Ambassador to Libya Ashley Adams on Tuesday met with Khalid al-Meshri, head of the Libyan Higher Council of State, in the capital Tripoli to discuss mutual cooperation between the two countries.

According to a statement by the Council's information office, the meeting focused on the developments in Libya and the outcomes of the recent Paris conference.

"In her first meeting with the elected head of the Council, the Canadian ambassador confirmed her country's full support for Libya, expressing aspiration for permanent return of the Canadian embassy and companies to Libya," the statement said.

Most foreign embassies and companies in Libya left following the 2011 uprising due to the insecurity and chaos in the country.

"The head of the Council praised Canada's positive and supportive role and neutral policy with all countries, calling for more momentum to resolving the Libyan crisis, not only on the political level, but also on the economic and educational level, given the positive impact on the Libyan political scene," the statement added.

Despite signing a UN-sponsored political agreement by the Libyan parties in December 2015, Libya remains politically divided between rival authorities in the east and west of the country, both competing for legitimacy.

Paris recently hosted a meeting on Libya with the participation of different Libyan parties to end the political crisis.

The parties agreed to hold and commit themselves to "credible" presidential and parliamentary elections slated for Dec. 10.
