MOSCOW, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Air defense systems at Russia's Hmeimim airbase in Syria destroyed two unidentified unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in the past two days, a spokesperson of the airbase said Sunday.

Hmeimim's anti-aircraft weapons systems detected two unidentified UAVs approaching the Russian military base respectively on Saturday night and Sunday morning, and then destroyed the air targets at some distance, the spokesperson said in a statement, according to Russian media.

Both incidents caused no casualties and no material damage, and the airbase continues to operate normally, the statement said.

The Hmeimim airbase in Syria's northwestern province of Latakia is the largest Russian-run military facility in the country.

In the last few months, the airbase has come under frequent attack and its air defenses have intercepted and destroyed a number of unidentified objects targeting the base, according to the Russian military.
