PHNOM PENH, July 26 (Xinhua) -- About 306 international observers from over 40 countries will monitor Cambodia's general election on July 29, a spokesman for the National Election Committee (NEC) said Thursday.

NEC member and spokesman Hang Puthea said foreign observers are from China, Myanmar, Singapore, Vietnam, Pakistan, the Philippines, Brunei, Thailand, and Indonesia, among others.

He added that those foreign monitors are also from international institutions such as the International Conference of Asian Political Parties, the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, the ASEAN Inter-Parliament Assembly, the European Council on International Relations, among others.

Besides international observers, nearly 90,000 local observers from political parties and about 80,000 others from national associations and organizations in the country are also expected to monitor the election.

The Southeast Asian country is scheduled to hold the general election for the 125-seat National Assembly on Sunday.

Twenty political parties will contest in the election, which will see some 8.38 million people cast their ballots, according to the NEC.

Among the parties are the ruling Cambodian People's Party of Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen, the Funcinpec Party of Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the League for Democracy Party of former opposition lawmaker Khem Veasna, the Grassroots Democracy Party of agronomist Yang Saing Koma, and the Khmer Will Party of former opposition member Kong Monika.
