South Africa seeks to mend "unsustainable" relations with Rwanda

CAPE TOWN, March 4 (Xinhua) -- The current state of relations between South Africa and Rwanda is unsustainable and needs to be addressed, a senior South African official said on Wednesday.

Bulelwa Kiva, acting chief director for East Africa at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, made the remarks during an online briefing to the Parliament's Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation.

Kiva said current efforts to resume the normalization process have been hampered by the schedules of senior representatives from both sides, but discussions remain ongoing.

She noted that high-level engagements have taken place on the margins of multilateral events, with discussions focusing on reviving bilateral relations, notably visa issues.

"South Africa and Rwanda are committed to this process and to resuscitating the Joint Commission of Cooperation," she said.
