BRUSSELS, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- An exhibition featuring famous Chinese comics works was officially opened here in the Belgian capital on Tuesday.

Titled "Panorama of Chinese comics -- Pictures from abroad", the exhibition includes about 350 Chinese comics. The works, divided into genres like Chinese cartoon history, cultural transmission, Chinese humor and modern manhua, intend to present Western public well-known manhua images and traditional Chinese cartoonists.

Jean-Claude de la Royere, curator of the exhibition, said that the conservation process of the last four years has combined the perspectives of China and Belgium, and that this exhibition would certainly arouse interest in the West.

He also mentioned how in the past Westerners did not know much about Chinese caricatures, saying that this such exhibition will allow for new discoveries.

Yao Yizhi, a Belgian painter of Chinese origin, told Xinhua that he was honored to have his masterpiece "Qu Sheng" (1986) officially displayed in Brussels, which is dubbed "European city of comics".

He said he believes the exhibition not only reflects China's rich social reality, but also shows distinctive Chinese cultural characteristics in its aesthetic style.

This exhibition of nearly seven months will strengthen understanding and friendship between Chinese people, Belgians and Europeans, and promote cultural exchanges with common aspirations, he added.

Organized by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and the Brussels Comic Strip Museum, the exhibition will last till Sept. 9.
