RAMALLAH, March 4 (Xinhua) -- The Revolutionary Council of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah Party on Sunday called for an Arab role to confront the U.S. policy of recognizing Jerusalem as

The U.S. declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel "can never create any new legal reality on the ground," the council, which wrapped up a three-day conference in Ramallah, said in a statement.

"Jerusalem will be the eternal capital of the Palestinian state," the statement said. "The Palestinians will never accept any attempt to reduce or lessen the Islamic, Arab and Palestinian right in Jerusalem."

The council also called on Arab nations and governments "to pass and overcome any attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause or marginalize it," adding: "The next Arab Summit will be an opportunity to stress and reiterate this fact."

The council welcomed the peace initiative presented by Abbas before the United Nations (UN) Security Council last month, which proposed holding an international peace conference in mid-2018 to end Israeli occupation based on the two-state solution and international legitimacy resolutions.

The statement also called on the countries that support the two-state solution to go on with their recognition of the state of Palestine.

Internally, the council called on the Palestine Liberation Organization executive committee to implement the Palestinian Central Council's decisions to reconsider ties with Israel and the agreements signed with it.

Last December, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the U.S. embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to the city.

The U.S. State Department said more than a week ago that the country is planning to open the embassy in Jerusalem in May, earlier than expected.
