JAKARTA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese men's badminton team are set to take on Hong Kong, China in quarter-finals, and the women's team will fight for a semi-final berth against Maldives following opening day's action at the 18th Asian Games here on Sunday.

Hong Kong, China secured their berth in men's team quarter-finals through Mongolia's walkover.

Japan, an anticipated main rival for China in the tournament, got past Malaysia 3-0.

Reigning world champion Momota Kento earned Japan a deserved lead with his 21-13, 21-14 victory over Liew Daren.

After doubles pair Kamura Takeshi and Sonoda Keigo overcame Malaysian counterparts Goh Wei Shem and Tan Wee Kiong 21-18, 21-18, Nishimoto Kenta sealed Japan's win as he got past Lee Zii Jia 21-18, 21-17.

"I feel good right now. It's all up to my mental adjustment and how I restrain the impact from wind inside the venue," said Nishimoto, adding that he hopes to do more for the team.

Son Wanho narrowly overcame Kantaphon Wangcharoen 24-22, 21-18 to put South Korea ahead of Thailand, before South Korea finally triumphed 3-1. India met little resistance from Maldives to march on 3-0.

Indonesian women's team brushed aside Hong Kong, China 3-0 in heated atmosphere in Gelora Bung Karno ISTORA.

However, the hosts didn't sail quite smoothly en route to their victory, as Gregoria Mariskatwo Tunjung and Fitriani Fitriani both clawed back from one game down to win their singles matches.

Maldives will be on China's way after edging Nepal through full sets. Chinese Taipei, featuring world No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying, was the other team breezing through Sunday's competitions, sweeping Pakistan 3-0.

Both Chinese men's and women's teams will kick off their campaign in Jakarta on Monday, with team champions set to come out on Wednesday.
