DAMASCUS, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- An explosion rocked the rebel-held Afrin enclave in northern Syria on Wednesday, killing two and wounding 18 others, activists reported.

The explosion was caused by a roadside bomb left on a sidewalk in a popular marketplace in Afrin in the northern countryside of Aleppo province, leaving many women and children wounded.

Kurdish activists said ambulances rushed to the scene and transported the wounded to hospital, adding that many of the wounded are in critical condition.

According to the emerging information, the bomb targeted the military commander of the Failaq al-Sham rebel group, Khaled Obeidat, amid reports that he was killed in the attack.

Afrin, a predominantly-Kurdish enclave near the Turkish border, fell to the Turkish-led rebels in March, which led to the displacement of thousands of Kurdish people.

The area was controlled by the Kurdish militiamen, mainly the People's Protection Units (YPG), which is regarded as a terror group by Turkey.

Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Wednesday that infighting erupted among the Turkey-backed rebels in the city of Jarablus in the northern countryside of Aleppo province.

The state of chaos also extends to the northwestern province of Idlib, which has become the last major rebel stronghold in Syria, where rebels are staging explosions, and kidnapping amid a state of lawlessness, according to the Observatory.
