Spotlight: Ukrainian officials, experts see more business cooperation with China

KIEV, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian officials and experts said on Wednesday that they see ample opportunities for Ukraine's business cooperation with China.

Speaking with Xinhua correspondent during a Chinese-Ukrainian business forum, Andriy Demchuk, the head of the investment department of the Ukrainian Economic Development and Trade Ministry, said that Kiev sees China as one of "the most powerful and the most promising" potential investors into Ukraine.

"There are several major industries of particular interest -- infrastructure projects, green energy projects, and the digital development of Ukraine," Demchuk said.

He noted that Kiev is interested in pushing forward cooperation with Chinese companies as they are bringing new technologies and know-how to Ukraine.

Iryna Nikorak, the head of Ukrainian association of Belt and Road cooperation "Silk Link", said that the strengthening of business cooperation between Ukraine and China is win-win for both sides.

Chinese companies could benefit from Ukraine's growing market and business-friendly environment, offering in exchange their vast international experience in implementing projects in agriculture, infrastructure and energy, Nikorak said.

Currently, Chinese and Ukrainian companies are implementing joint projects in Ukraine, bringing positive changes in the country's economy, she added.

"New jobs are being created and taxes are being paid to the Ukrainian budget by the Chinese companies," Nikorak told Xinhua.

Nikorak voiced her hope that the first China International Import Expo (CIIE), which is scheduled to be held in Shanghai in November, will give a powerful impetus to the development of partnership between Chinese and Ukrainian business communities.

Sergiy Popov, a partner at the "KPMG-Ukraine" company that provides assistance to Chinese business people working in Ukraine, said he is also optimistic about the prospects of business cooperation between China and Ukraine.

Although there are still some challenges for doing business in Ukraine related to administrative barriers, more and more Chinese companies are interested in either entering the Ukrainian market or expanding their presence, Popov said.

"Ukraine is moving in the right direction. Today, those Chinese companies that are determined to do business or implement projects in Ukraine receive all the necessary permits and receive support from the government agencies," Popov told Xinhua.

The Chinese-Ukrainian business forum was organized by the "Silk Link" and the "KPMG-Ukraine" to help Chinese companies better understand the specific features of doing business in Ukraine.

The event brought together Ukrainian government and parliament members, experts and representatives of Chinese and Ukrainian business communities.
