LOS ANGELES, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Disney and Marvel's superhero film "Avengers: Endgame" easily repeated as the winner of the North American box office with a massive 145.8 million U.S. dollars in its second weekend.

The film also brought in 282.2 million dollars from overseas markets this weekend through Sunday for a global total of 2.189 billion dollars, becoming the fastest film to cross the 2-billion-U.S.-dollar mark at the worldwide box office in history, according to studio figures collected by measurement firm Comscore.

It's now the second biggest global release of all-time, just behind James Cameron's 2009 sci-fi film "Avatar," which brought in 2.8 billion dollars worldwide.

Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, "Avengers: Endgame" is a film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the Avengers. It's the 22nd installment of the Marvel Universe franchise and purported to be the last with this star lineup. The film follows the surviving members of the Avengers and their allies who work to reverse the damage caused by Thanos in Infinity War.

According to Comscore's PostTrak audience survey, audiences continued to love "Avengers: Endgame" and they gave it a full 5 out of 5 stars with a massive 88 total positive score.

China is the film's top grossing international market. According to the major Chinese online ticketing service Maoyan, since its debut on April 23, the film's total box office in China reached 3.88 billion yuan (576 million U.S. dollars) to date, ranking third in Chinese mainland box office history, only after the homegrown sci-fi "The Wandering Earth" and the Chinese action movie "Wolf Warrior 2."

"The film keeps on rewriting the record books around the world and of course in China where a love of cinema and the movie theater experience has made this essential movie market one of the key drivers in the film's massive and unprecedented success," Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, told Xinhua.

Newcomers were obviously no match for "Avengers: Endgame." Far behind in second place, Sony's release of psychological thriller film "The Intruder" opened with an estimated 11 million dollars in its debut weekend. Directed by Deon Taylor, the film stars Michael Ealy and Meagan Good as a young couple who buy a beautiful Napa Valley house in the country, only to realize its previous owner refuses to let it go.

Another newcomer, Lionsgate's comedy film "Long Shot," opened in third place with an estimated 10.02 million dollars. Directed by Jonathan Levine, the film follows a journalist who begins to spend time with his former babysitter, who prepares to make a run for the Presidency.

STX's animated comedy film "UglyDolls" opened in fourth with an estimated 8.51 million dollars this weekend. Directed by Kelly Asbury, the plot follows a group of plush toys as they are sent to the "real" world to find the love of a child despite their flaws.

Another Disney's presentation of Marvel, "Captain Marvel," finished fifth with an estimated 4.27 million dollars in its ninth weekend. The film has grossed 420.8 million dollars in North America for a world cume of 1.12 billion dollars.
