BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish side upheld the one-China principle and properly handled telecom fraud cases involving Taiwan residents, a Chinese mainland spokesperson said Wednesday.

People from both sides of the Taiwan Strait have frequently become victims of telecom frauds, in which primary suspects were largely residents of Taiwan, said An Fengshan, a spokesperson with the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, at a press conference when commenting on the recent extradition of telecom fraud suspects from Spain.

The mainland has been determined to crack down upon these frauds for the sake of safeguarding justice and protecting the rights and interests of victims and brought criminals to justice in line with the law, An said, adding that the mainland's actions have received both recognition from people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and understanding and support from the international community.

"We all know who is ignoring people's interests and placing barriers for cross-Strait joint operations against crimes," he said in response to the argument from the island's authorities about the joint investigation.

A group of 94 suspects were extradited from Spain to China Friday. They were among the 237 suspects detained in Spain in a three-year joint operation against cross-border telecom fraud, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

A total of 225 suspects have been handed over to Chinese police, and 218 of them were from Taiwan.
